Saturday, September 28th, 2019. 8:00 a.m. My first cup of coffee. My first stick of cigarette. Tis’ a beautiful morning here in Oahu Nei for a Hale Nani Local 5 Beach Day Official Victory Party. I patiently sipped on my cup of coffee as I was waiting for the arrival of my fellow Hale Nani Local 5 union member of mines, Barbara Nansen, who would be dropping off 2 trays of her freshly baked Panipopos

Sadly, Barbara wasn’t able to attend our Hale Nani Local 5 Beach Day Official Victory Party, but let it be known you are appreciated. Thank you for waking up early on a Sunday morning, baking us a batch of your homemade Panipopos, and delivering it to my home here in Aiea. We are the mighty, mighty, Red Rangers! Hale Nani Local 5!

Nomnom! My personal stash of freshly baked Panipopos from my fellow Hale Nani Local 5 union member Barbara Nansen. I’m actually enjoying these Panipopos right now as I’m typing this paragraph

On Saturday, September 28th, 2019, Unite Here Local 5 Hale Nani union members held their official “Beach Day Victory Party” at Magic Island within Ala Moana Beach Park from noon till sunset celebrating their brand spankin’ new union contract with an overwhelming 99% “Yes” vote achieving better staffing, and the highest wage increase in the history of Hale Nani Rehabilitation & Nursing Center. We are the mighty, mighty Red Rangers! Hale Nani Local 5!

There’s not a better way to start off a Hale Nani Local 5 Beach Day Official Victory Party than starting it off with a red solo cup filled with Heineken! Cheers!

First group shot of the day with my mighty, might Red Rangers! Hale Nani Local 5!

The obligatory weird faces and smiles photo right before the first slice of the knife penetrates the lechon for all to feast on. Pictured from left to right is Committee Leader Jerwin Bragado, Rose Torio, Joselynn Galintano, and Committee Leader Julienne Corpuz

The mandatory blessing by John Sakuma, husband of our very own Hale Nani Local 5 union member Vera Sakuma before our feast began

A wide range of ethnic dishes and local favorites as well as desserts occupied our table space with the Lechon being the piece de resistance

An Instagrammer instragramming an Instagrammer. A Committee Leader instagramming a Committee Leader. A weirdo instagramming another weirdo. Be sure to give our Committee Leader Julienne Corpuz a follow on her Instagram account over at @corpuzzy!

Pictured below is my partner in crime, smoke break buddy, pit master, and Shop Steward Rey Patague. He arrived unusually late this year due to his 12 hour graveyard shift at Kaiser Permanente but we’ve barbequed together 3 years ago during our very first Hale Nani Local 5 Beach Day Victory Party, we’ve barbequed together during our current Hale Nani Local 5 Beach Day Official Victory Party which occured yesterday, and I’m sure we’ll be barbequing together once again when our future Hale Nani Local 5 Beach Day Victory Party comes around in four years. Ole, ole, ole, ole!

On the barbeque menu for the day included (6) slabs of Rib Eye, 10 lbs. of May’s Hawaiian Style Kalbi Beef Short Ribs, and Rey Patague’s very own “Better Than Sex” Asian Style Pork Belly

And the (6) slabs of Rib Eye disappeared with the quickness. I was only able to sample a slice of two from a slab of Rib Eye that’s pictured above that was perfectly barbequed by our pit master Rey Patague being I was preoccupied with a liquid diet throughout the entire day and afternoon

I managed to sneak away from the hustle and bustle of our Hale Nani Local 5 Beach Day Official Victory Party for a quick stroll or two or three around Ala Moana Beach Park. Nothing beats the feeling of trying to bury the MPH speedometer guage on a moped especially on a straightaway like Ala Moana Boulevard a couple of times. My personal “woosah” moment for the day

Pictured towards the left of yours truly is Committee Leader Louie Bernardo and Unite Here Local 5 Lead Organizer Daniel Kerwin. What’s your name? Where you from? What union you claim? Unite Here LOCAL 5!

A momento shot before we parted ways for the afternoon. We are the mighty, mighty Red Rangers! Hale Nani Local 5!

XOXO,

Peter Rosario
