EIGHT08 BLOGS: Lili’uokalani Park and Gardens

Lili’uokalani Park and Gardens is located on 189 Lihiwai Street in Hilo, Hawaii. Named for Hawaii’s last ruling monarch, Queen Lili’uokalani, Lili’uokalani Park and Gardens opened in 1919 and was styled as a tribute to the first Japanese immigrants to the Big Island who helped build it’s agricultural history starting in 1868

Lili’uokalani Park and Gardens is a 30 acre park showcasing Edo style rock gardens, koi ponds, stone lanterns and sculptures, arching bridges, gazebos, Japanese Teahouses, and is said to be the largest Edo style garden outside of Japan

Various trees, flowering bushes, bamboo glades, and acres of green grass can be found throughout Lili’uokalani Park and Gardens
Lili’uokalani Park and Gardens is perfectly positioned with views of the surrounding Hilo Bay and Mokuola, the “Island of life”, also known as Coconut Island

There is a footbridge you can cross to Coconut Island and is great place for a picnic with even more views to the Hilo Bay as well as historic downtown Hilo

Mokuola, the “island of life”, also known as Coconut Island once held a Hawaiian temple dedicated to the healing arts
Lili’uokalani Park and Gardens is very popular amongst both locals and tourists alike for jogging, tai chi, yoga, AND fishing aka shore fishing as yours truly did on occasion during my 30 days stay in Hilo, Hawaii

And for yours truly, Lili’uokalani Park and Gardens granted me easy access to watching the sun rise with a bento in hand in preparation for an 8 to 16 hour shift on a Covid Unit I was assigned to during my 30 day stay in Hilo, Hawaii

as well as easy access to watching the sun set during my day offs with some local kine grinds in hand from Verna’s Drive Inn
